At Bully Hills Confessions of an American Oxycontin Addict Thaddeus DeLuca 9781465310002 Books

I went to grade school and high school with the author of this book (and his wife). I only learned of its existence last week through a friend, when I learned that Thad had died in a car crash just after New Year's Day. Although I knew he had a substance abuse problem, I did not know the severity and duration of his addictions. This is an autobiographical account of his struggle to get clean.

At Bully Hills is not for the faint of heart; it is very graphic in some sections. He writes about his hallucinations as he is coming down off the drugs in the hospital, and details sexual hallucinations/fantasies/experiences with little left to the imagination. I wasn't shocked, but found reading certain chapters disturbing (like I needed to take a hot shower to clean off a disgusted feeling.) There were a number of typographical errors in the book, which sadly, I have come to accept as part of too many books published recently, particularly ebooks. They are annoying and distracting, and take away from the reading experience.

Parts of the book were well written; I particularly enjoyed reading about his interactions with those trying to help him while he was in rehab. I was far less interested in the mythology explanations for some of his hallucinations, some of those passages got boring in a hurry. Much of the first part of the book detailed his first days in what was to be a 30 day rehabilitation program; some of the narrative could have been tightened up a little. Anyone who has dealt with a personal struggle with prescription drug addiction, or lived through it with a loved one, will likely see some commonalities with DeLuca's experiences. The book should be read by anyone who is considering taking Oxycontin as a pain management protocol, the drug is well known for its addictive properties and getting off the drug is a hellish experience.

The book was an emotionally wrenching read for a lot of reasons, but I am glad that I stuck with it to the end. The final chapters gave me an insight as to why Thad acted the way he did in our later elementary school years. Although he and I went through a number of years in school together, we were not friends in any sense of the word; knowing him when we were growing up has coloured my reading experience. He was a bully, abusive to those who weren't part of his group. It was a long time ago and we are/were different people now. I am very saddened by his untimely passing; he left a family to grieve, and the world has lost an intelligent man and by many accounts, a gifted musician. If he were alive I would have reached out to him and I think we would have had a good, frank discussion of our lives past and present......I am confident we could have learned a lot from each other.

This is a hard-hitting, no nonsense approach to one of our country's biggest problems today. Though the names have been changed the individual stories are authentic. The author's illustrations, detailing the inner turmoil that often consumes those struggling with addiction, have a high professional quality about them which drive home the the hellish reality that users go through.
